Banco Sabadell pioneers the acceptance of electronic DNIs in its internet banking system

10/17/2006

  • Customers may use their electronic DNI (national ID document) to identify themselves and perform queries via the BS Online internet banking services

  • In the medium term, electronic DNIs will be accepted for the purposes of transaction signatures and the remote contracting of financial products and services

Banco Sabadell has become the first bank to accept electronic DNIs (national ID documents) in its internet banking services (BS Online). Customers of the bank who have an electronic DNI can now identify themselves and consult their accounts by simply using a reader and their electronic document.

Banco Sabadell has two aims in adding this new identification system to its BS Online service. The first is to render its distance banking services more robust through the use of digital certificates. Access by means of certificates, as an alternative mechanism to a username and password, will make it possible to prevent potential cases of phishing and other IT crimes of which the bank’s customers may be victims. Secondly, the bank is beginning to pave the way for transaction signatures and the contracting of financial products and services by means of a recognised electronic signature.

Banco Sabadell already broke new ground in using digital certificates to identify its customers back in 2001. As a result of that experience and its state-of-the-art technological platform, it has been possible to integrate electronic DNIs into its internet banking services in a very short time. Furthermore, the bank has been assisted by netfocus, a company that specialises in incorporating electronic signatures into business processes.

According to Miquel Montes, Banco Sabadell's general manager, "the implementation of reliable means of authentication is in tune with our initiatives geared to generating an environment of digital trust with our customers. The emergence of this new mechanism opens the door to a wide range of innovative possibilities, which Banco Sabadell is constantly analysing".

The bank is also working on the integration of electronic DNIs into other environments for internal use, such as employee identification within its corporate systems.
